Jose Vazquez is a Professor and Section Chief in the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, where he specializes in Infectious Diseases. He holds an MD from Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (1985) and is board certified in Internal Medicine by ABIM, with additional licensure in multiple states including Michigan, Illinois, and Georgia.
His primary research focuses on fungal infections, particularly candidiasis, mucosal and invasive mycoses, and polymicrobial biofilms involving Candida, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Aspergillus. He is a leading contributor to clinical trials evaluating novel antifungal therapies such as rezafungin.
The recent publications highlight a strong trend in high-impact clinical trials and meta-analyses targeting invasive fungal infections, especially in immunocompromised and critically ill patients, including those affected by COVID-19. His work bridges translational research with direct clinical application in antimicrobial stewardship and ICU management.

He is actively involved in academic governance, serving as Chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB-A), Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and Antimicrobial Subcommittee since 2013–2014. He also participated in the search committee for Chief of Internal Medicine.
Professional Engagement: He serves as a reviewer for top journals including Annals of Internal Medicine, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, and Applied & Environmental Microbiology, and is a member of the American Society for Microbiology.
