Dr Jose Tomas Labarca is an Isaac Newton Trust Academic Career Development Fellow at the University of Cambridge's Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) and affiliated with St Edmund's College. Holding interdisciplinary qualifications in History and Sociology, he earned his PhD in Sociology from the University of Edinburgh in 2023, which was recognized with the Political Studies Association’s Walter Bagehot Prize for the best dissertation in government and public administration.
- Research Focus: Explores intersections of state institutions, government elites, expert knowledge, and economic policymaking in the UK.
- Key Project: Investigates pivotal transformations in British budget politics and macroeconomic institutions (1960s–1980s), challenging existing models of neoliberalism and austerity politics.
His academic career includes prior work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at King's College London on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project The Political Economy of Growth Models in an Age of Stagnation.
