معرفی
Professor Jose Penades is a Chair in Microbiology at the Department of Infectious Disease, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London. He leads the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology and holds affiliations with the Institute of Infection, Centre for Structural Biology, Immuno-Pathology Network, and Section of Molecular Microbiology. His career spans academic roles at institutions including the University of Glasgow (2013–2020) and Cardenal Herrera CEU University. His research focuses on bacterial biofilms, Staphylococcus aureus pathogenicity islands (SaPIs), phage biology, and evolutionary mechanisms.
Research Highlights: Penades discovered the Bap protein’s role in biofilm formation (2001), pioneered studies on SaPIs as mobile genetic elements, and elucidated lateral transduction mechanisms with collaborators. His work integrates structural biology, genomics, and evolutionary perspectives.
Awards & Collaborations: A Fellow of the Royal Society (2024) and recipient of prestigious ERC grants, he collaborates with leading scientists like Alberto Marina (structural biology), John Chen (phage research), and Richard Novick (SaPI dynamics). His career reflects sustained innovation in bacterial pathogenesis and horizontal gene transfer.
Education & Mentorship: Earned a Veterinary Medicine degree and PhD from Spanish institutions, later transitioning to microbiology. He has mentored numerous students and postdocs, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to infectious disease research.
