Jose Lalas is a Professor of Literacy and Teacher Education at the University of Redlands, where he also directs the Center for Educational Justice. With 31 years of experience in teacher education, he previously served at California State University Dominguez Hills and as a junior high school teacher. His research focuses on educational justice, critical theory, and literacy pedagogy, addressing issues like achievement gaps, dual language instruction, and social class impacts on learning. He has authored/co-authored multiple books, including Who We Are and How We Learn (2016) and Challenges Associated with Cross-Cultural Engagement (2017). His current work explores critical theory and resistance in education.
Education: Ph.D. in Reading/Language Arts (University of Washington), Ed.S. in Program Administration (Seattle Pacific University), M.Ed. in Reading/Language Arts (Seattle Pacific University), B.S. (University of the Philippines), and K-8 Teaching Credential.
Research Interests: His work bridges theory and practice, emphasizing equity solutions for marginalized students. He investigates adaptive pedagogies for English learners, special needs students, and culturally diverse learners, with a focus on systemic barriers in education. Recent research examines dual language immersion programs, social capital, and funds of knowledge.
Awards: Recipient of the California School Board Association/Asian Pacific Caucus Award of Merit.
Grants & Leadership: Directed teacher education programs and credentialing initiatives. Currently leads the University of Redlands’ Center for Educational Justice, focusing on policy development and community engagement.
