Jose G. Merino-Juarez, MD, MPhil, is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Neurology Education and Training. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Florida, the Section on Stroke Diagnostics and Therapeutics at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NIH), and Johns Hopkins University. Since 2012 he serves as the US Research Editor of The BMJ.
Education: He earned his MD from Universidad Anáhuac in Mexico City, an MPhil in the History of Medicine at the University of Cambridge, and a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Western Ontario. He completed a dual residency in Neurology & Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in Vascular Neurology at the University of Western Ontario.
Research & Clinical Focus:
- Acute stroke management and thrombolytic therapy
- Neuroimaging biomarkers of stroke and reperfusion
- Vascular cognitive impairment and post-stroke dementia
- Blood–brain barrier disruption after cardiac surgery
- Medical device evaluation frameworks (IDEAL-D)
Across more than 45 peer-reviewed publications since 2001, his work has consistently integrated advanced MRI techniques with clinical outcomes to refine therapeutic decision-making in acute stroke. Notable contributions include defining reperfusion half-life as a pharmacodynamic measure, validating lesion-volume change as a predictor of tPA response, and harmonizing international standards for vascular cognitive impairment.
Honors & Fellowships:
- The Fisher Family/Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Fellowship
- Fellow of the American Heart Association
- Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology
Dr. Merino is board-certified in Neurology and in Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology. His editorial leadership at The BMJ and extensive book chapters further demonstrate his commitment to evidence synthesis and global stroke education.
Laboratory & Collaborative Networks: While no specific lab is named, his collaborative work spans multiple North American stroke centers and the NIH intramural Stroke Diagnostics and Therapeutics Section, emphasizing multi-site imaging trials and international harmonization initiatives.
