Dr. Jose Alejandro Luchsinger is the Robert F. Loeb Professor of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). He serves as Vice-Chair for Clinical and Epidemiologic Research in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Center for Research on Aging and Quality of Life. With a faculty appointment since 1999, Dr. Luchsinger is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and conducts research at the intersection of aging, dementia, and metabolic disorders.
- MD from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas
- Internal Medicine Residency at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City (including one year as chief medical resident)
- General Medicine Fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center
- MPH in Epidemiology from Mailman School of Public Health at CUIMC
Dr. Luchsinger's research has focused extensively on the relation of vascular, metabolic, and dietary factors to aging outcomes, primarily cognition, in diverse populations. He has made significant contributions to understanding how diabetes and insulin resistance relate to Alzheimer's disease, and was part of the team that first reported an association between the Mediterranean diet and lower risk of cognitive disorders. His research program includes cohort studies and clinical trials examining the effects of metformin on cognitive impairment and pioneering work on dementia caregiving, including the first trial ever comparing two caregiver interventions specifically for Hispanic populations.
Analysis of Dr. Luchsinger's extensive publication record reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of metabolic health and cognitive aging across more than two decades. His work spans epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and translational research examining vascular risk factors, diabetes, and dietary patterns in relation to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). A distinctive feature of his research is the emphasis on health disparities, particularly in minority populations, and the development of culturally appropriate interventions for both patients with cognitive impairment and their caregivers.
- Director of the Center on Aging and Health Disparities (CAHD) in the Division of General Medicine
- CAHD houses the Northern Manhattan Center of Excellence in Minority Health and Health Disparities at Columbia University, funded by NIMHD
- Collaborates with the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain
Dr. Luchsinger's work encompasses multiple research areas including risk factors and prevention of ADRD, health of caregivers of persons with ADRD, aging and brain outcomes of diabetes and related metabolic conditions, detection of cognitive impairment in primary care, and health disparities in aging and ADRD. His research combines epidemiological, translational, and intervention approaches to address critical questions in aging and cognitive health.
