Jose Alejandro Luchsinger

Dr. Jose Alejandro Luchsinger is the Robert F. Loeb Professor of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). He serves as Vice-Chair for Clinical and Epidemiologic Research in the Department of Medicine and Director of the Center for Research on Aging and Quality of Life. With a faculty appointment since 1999, Dr. Luchsinger is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and conducts research at the intersection of aging, dementia, and metabolic disorders.

Dr. Luchsinger's research has focused extensively on the relation of vascular, metabolic, and dietary factors to aging outcomes, primarily cognition, in diverse populations. He has made significant contributions to understanding how diabetes and insulin resistance relate to Alzheimer's disease, and was part of the team that first reported an association between the Mediterranean diet and lower risk of cognitive disorders. His research program includes cohort studies and clinical trials examining the effects of metformin on cognitive impairment and pioneering work on dementia caregiving, including the first trial ever comparing two caregiver interventions specifically for Hispanic populations.

Analysis of Dr. Luchsinger's extensive publication record reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of metabolic health and cognitive aging across more than two decades. His work spans epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and translational research examining vascular risk factors, diabetes, and dietary patterns in relation to Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD). His research combines epidemiological, translational, and intervention approaches to address critical questions in aging and cognitive health.
