Prof. Joscha Legewie is a Professor of Sociology and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Harvard University's Department of Sociology, part of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He previously held positions as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center and was slated to join New York University in 2014 before moving to Harvard. His research focuses on urban inequality, social stratification, education systems, race/ethnicity dynamics, and policing practices. He employs innovative quantitative methods, including quasi-experimental designs and big data analysis, to examine institutional impacts on marginalized communities.
Legewie earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from Columbia University in 2013. His work bridges multiple disciplines, with affiliations at Harvard's Center for Population and Development Studies, Data Science Initiative, and the Institute for Quantitative Social Science. Key research themes include the consequences of policing on minority youth education, spatial dimensions of inequality through neighborhood boundaries, and the societal repercussions of extreme events like terrorism on intergroup relations.
His articles, published in top journals like the American Journal of Sociology and American Sociological Review, demonstrate a focus on causal mechanisms and policy-relevant outcomes. Current projects explore how stop-and-frisk policies affect minority communities and the role of 311 service requests in mapping urban conflict patterns. Legewie's interdisciplinary approach integrates computational tools with traditional sociological inquiry to address pressing contemporary issues.
