Jorma Harju serves as a Docent (Adjunct Professor) in the Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki, specializing in observational astronomy and space science. His research centers on interstellar molecular clouds and the initial conditions of star formation, utilizing advanced radio telescopes including ALMA and ESO facilities.
Harju's primary research focuses on physical and chemical processes in pre-stellar cores, with particular expertise in nuclear spin ratios of deuterated molecules, cosmic-ray ionization rates, and molecular depletion patterns. His work bridges molecular astrophysics and star formation theory through high-precision radio observations of regions like L1544 and Ophiuchus, revealing critical insights into deuterium fractionation and core evolution.
Analysis of his recent publications (2023-2025) shows consistent emphasis on observational studies of prestellar environments using molecular tracers like ammonia and deuterated species. His research increasingly incorporates international collaborations and interdisciplinary approaches, as evidenced by his work on Near-Earth Object radar systems alongside traditional astrophysics.
Harju actively mentors the next generation of scientists, having supervised 6 doctoral theses and 3 Master's/Licentiate theses. His research is supported by significant projects including the ERC Advanced Grant SAEMPL (2013-2018), NEO-RADAR (2020-2021), and two long-term investigations into star formation stages (2007-2009 and 2010-2013).
