PD Dr. Joris van Gastel is an art historian specializing in Baroque sculpture and material culture. Formerly Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich's Institute of Art History (2018-2024), he now conducts research at Spain's Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas. His interdisciplinary work examines artistic materiality in early modern Italy through frameworks of sensory engagement and cultural meaning.
Research explores the material dimensions of Baroque art, particularly in Naples and Rome, with emphases on:
- Sculptural embodiment and tactile reception
- Marble intarsia techniques and material semantics
- Still life painting in social-political contexts
- Intersections of art, geology, and natural philosophy
