Rogerio Jorge is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on plasma physics and fusion energy, particularly the design and optimization of stellarator devices. Previously, he held roles as a Principal Investigator for EUROfusion’s Enabling Research Grant at IST Lisbon and a Humboldt Research Fellow at the Max-Planck Institute. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Engineering Physics from IST Lisbon and his Ph.D. from the IST-EPFL Joint Doctoral Initiative, receiving prestigious awards including the 2020 EPS-PPD Ph.D. Research Award and the EPFL Physics Doctoral Thesis Award.
His work emphasizes magnetic field configurations for fusion reactors, using advanced computational tools and machine learning. Key contributions include developing quasi-isodynamic stellarators, optimizing coil systems, and studying plasma turbulence in non-axisymmetric geometries. He leads the UWPlasma research group and collaborates with the Simons Collaboration on Hidden Symmetries and Fusion Energy, an international initiative advancing mathematical and physical approaches to fusion science.
Notable achievements include designing high-field stellarators like Stellaris and advancing frameworks like SIMSOPT for stellarator optimization. His research bridges theoretical plasma physics with practical engineering challenges in achieving sustainable fusion energy.
