معرفی
Jorge Rocha is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. He leads the Human Evolutionary Genetics group at CIBIO-InBIO, focusing on genetic studies of African populations, linguistic-genetic correlations, and human adaptation. His work includes investigations into lactase persistence, pigmentation genetics, and the Bantu expansions' demographic impacts.
Educated at the University of Porto, he holds a PhD. His research spans interdisciplinary projects in Angola, Mozambique, and the Gulf of Guinea, integrating genetics with anthropology to understand population histories. Key projects include DemiKhoe (Khoe-Kwadi language genetics) and studies on São Tomé and Cape Verde admixture patterns.
Research interests emphasize genetic adaptation, population structure, and the interplay between language and genetics in southern Africa. His publications address microbiome diversity, Bantu migration genetics, and historical demography. Supervised students include Ana Amorim and Vítor Araújo, contributing to studies on Khoe-Kwadi populations and salivary microbiomes.
Labs/teams: Human Evolutionary Genetics group at CIBIO-InBIO; collaborates with IPATIMUP and international teams on African genomic projects. Current work explores genetic architecture of pigmentation traits and demographic models of Khoe-San populations.
