Jorge Mena-Ali serves as Assistant Dean of Faculty Diversity Initiatives and House Don at Roschel College, alongside his role as Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology. His academic journey includes a B.S. and M.S. from the Universidad de Costa Rica and a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on plant reproductive ecology, evolutionary disease biology, and tropical conservation, with particular emphasis on plant-pathogen interactions and invasive species.
His notable grants include a National Science Foundation Research Initiation Grant (2009–2014) exploring disease-driven diversification and a Post-Doctoral Minority Fellowship (2007–2009) investigating phylogenetic and ecological determinants of disease complexes. His work bridges evolutionary genetics, molecular ecology, and conservation, often addressing how environmental and genetic factors shape plant resilience and diversity.
Scientific contributions span plant-microbe interactions, reproductive strategies in endangered species, and tropical biodiversity. Notable awards include the NSF Post-Doctoral Minority Fellowship. Mena-Ali has advised students like ST Veterano and LS Coffua, focusing on fungal pathogens and plant reproductive systems. His research also explores inbreeding depression in Solanum species and seed abortion in Bauhinia ungulata, contributing to both theoretical and applied plant biology.
