Jorge Lampreia

Jorge Lampreia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He serves as Subdirector for Pedagogical Affairs, overseeing academic and curricular matters. His research focuses on biochemical and structural studies of enzymes from sulfate-reducing bacteria, particularly cytochrome systems and metalloproteins involved in energy metabolism and electron transfer.

His work explores the structural-functional relationships of proteins such as adenylylsulfate reductase, nitrite reductase, and cytochromes, with emphasis on metal-binding sites, enzyme catalysis mechanisms, and protein interactions. He employs techniques like X-ray crystallography, spectroscopy, and bioinformatics to study bacterial enzymes critical for sulfur and nitrogen cycles.

Publications highlight advancements in understanding metalloprotein architecture, including cobalt/zinc-containing adenylate kinases and heterometallic clusters. His research also extends to biotechnological applications, such as developing electrochemical biosensors for nitrite detection. Collaborations span enzymology, structural biology, and microbial physiology, with a focus on Desulfovibrio species and other anaerobic bacteria.
