Dr. Jorge L. Soberón is a University Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas, affiliated with the Biodiversity Institute and the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. His research focuses on spatial patterns of biodiversity, niche theory, and conservation biology, emphasizing the integration of distributional, phylogenetic, and interaction data. He collaborates with computer scientists and institutions globally to improve conservation planning through data-constrained theorizing.
Research interests include the mathematical modeling of species distributions, the influence of niche factors across scales, and biodiversity governance. He has pioneered work on ecological niche modeling and its application to conservation. Teaching emphasizes quantitative ecology, including multivariate methods and mathematical modeling through hands-on workshops.
Dr. Soberón has received notable awards such as the 2016 and 2015 Highly-Cited Researcher titles (Thompson-Reuters), membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2018), and the Distinguished Mexican Living Abroad award (2015). His work bridges theoretical and applied ecology, with a focus on synthesizing data from diverse sources to address conservation challenges.
Current projects explore how scale affects ecological variables, integrating alternative biodiversity datasets, and the governance of biodiversity policies. He actively contributes to international conservation initiatives and collaborates with global research networks.
