Jorge Freire Sousa is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) of the University of Porto and a Senior Researcher at CEGI (Industrial Engineering and Management research unit of INESC TEC). His academic career began in 1996 with a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from the University of Porto, following earlier degrees in Electrical Engineering (1978, University of Porto) and Operational Research (1989, Technical University of Lisbon). He has held leadership roles, including Coordinator of the Industrial Engineering and Management Unit at FEUP (1997-98 and 2003-05) and Board Member of STCP (Public Transport Company of Porto, 1998-2002 and 2006-2012). His research focuses on Transportation systems, Decision Support Systems, and Applied Operations Research, with a strong emphasis on urban mobility challenges.
His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to urban planning, addressing digitalization’s impact on mobility and sustainability. As a Member of the Editorial Board of Transportation Research Procedia, he contributes to advancing scholarly discourse in his field. Key research themes include participatory service design for urban mobility, citizen engagement methodologies, and collaborative logistics strategies to enhance resource efficiency. Supervised theses include studies on sustainable urban logistics business models and big data applications in transportation management.
Dr. Sousa’s projects emphasize bridging technical and societal dimensions of urban systems. Recent studies have proposed frameworks for co-designing mobility solutions and enhancing customer participation in service management. His contributions address both policy-making and technical implementation challenges in smart cities.
