Jorge Ferrada Herrera

Jorge Ferrada Herrera is Full Professor (Titular) at the School of Architecture, Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV) since 1998 and Director of its Center for Heritage Studies. An architect graduated from PUCV (1989) and PhD in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (2003), he has also served as visiting professor at architecture schools in Rennes, Bordeaux and Genoa.

Research Interests

His work centres on architectural heritage, coastal and maritime architecture, urban marginality, and the preservation and transformation of Valparaíso’s historic slopes and waterfront. Courses such as Marginality, coastal border and city-port and Nautical and Maritime Project Workshop illustrate this focus.

Across more than three decades he has investigated the architectural and urban value of Valparaíso’s retaining walls, post-disaster recovery planning, port-city relationships, and sustainable territorial planning for coastal communities, integrating historical analysis with contemporary design strategies.

Publications & Projects

Recent outputs range from Act&form No. 15 (2022) to heritage rehabilitation studies of public libraries, parks, and urban waterfronts. A consistent theme is the multiscalar reading of territory, intertwining heritage conservation with new civic infrastructures.

Advising & Fieldwork

Since 1998 he has led Travesías—intensive field trips across South America—and supervised numerous undergraduate and master’s theses addressing coastal recovery, heritage reuse, and urban mobility in Valparaíso’s hills.
