Jorge Braga Riera is a Professor in the Department of English Studies at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where he teaches in the Bachelor's Degree in English Studies, the Master's Degree in Literary Translation, and at the Institute of Languages and Translators. He holds a PhD in English Philology from the University of Oviedo and is accredited as a full university professor.
His academic career includes teaching positions at CES Felipe II-UCM (Translation and Interpreting, 2001-2014), the Faculty of Translation of the University of Malaga (2010-2012), and the University of Central Lancashire in Madrid (2011-2014). As a professional translator, he has worked with major Spanish publishing houses including Gredos, Alianza Editorial, and the Spanish University Foundation, with his recent translation of Ezra Pound's The Spirit of Romance published in 2025.
Professor Braga Riera's research focuses primarily on translation studies, particularly literary translation (especially drama) and contrastive studies (Spanish-English, English-Spanish). His scholarly output demonstrates a strong trajectory in theatrical translation, with increasing attention to retranslation phenomena, gender representation in translated theatre, and the historical reception of Spanish Golden Age drama in English-speaking contexts. His publications reveal sophisticated analysis of how theatrical texts navigate cultural transitions through the translation process, with particular attention to non-verbal elements, paratextual components, and the evolving portrayal of women's roles across different translations of the same dramatic works.
His significant publications include The English Translation of the Comedies of the Golden Age (2009), Classical Spanish Drama in Restoration English (1660-1700) (2009), Tools and Techniques for English-Spanish Translation: Literary Texts (2015, with JP Rica), and Theatre is Different: The Translation of the Dramatic Experience (2024). He has also edited important reference works including the Dictionary of Theatrical Reception in Spain (2020).
Professor Braga Riera currently serves as editor of Estudios de Traducción and is an active member of both the Madrid Theatre Institute (ITEM) and the University Institute of Modern Languages and Translators (IULMYT). His research has been supported through participation in significant projects including the INTRAL Literary Translation Research Group and the CARTEMAD-CM and CONSTEMAD-CM projects (funded by CAM/EU).
He actively supervises PhD candidates working on translation topics, particularly welcoming proposals related to paratranslation, literary translation, ideology and theatre translation, children's literature in translation, retranslation, and translation history. His supervision approach integrates theoretical frameworks with practical translation concerns, emphasizing the cultural dimensions of translation.
