Dr. Jooyoun Lee is a Professor of Global Studies and Political Science at St. Edward's University. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Syracuse University and has held academic positions at St. Edward's since 2013, advancing from Assistant to Associate Professor before becoming a full Professor in 2023. Previously, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (2011–2013). Her research focuses on identity politics, East Asian international relations, gender studies, and popular culture's role in shaping historical memory.
Dr. Lee's educational background includes a B.A. in English Literature from Ewha Womans University (1996), an M.A. in Northeast Asian Studies from Kyung Hee University (1998), and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University (2012). She has served as president and local arrangements chair of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies (2018–2019) and represents SWCAS on the Council of Conferences of the Association for Asian Studies (2023–2026).
Her research explores intersections between popular culture, gender, and international security. Notable works include analyses of the 2015 Comfort Women Agreement, inter-Korean border dynamics, and the global influence of Korean popular culture (Hallyu). She emphasizes bridging research and pedagogy, mentoring students to become critical thinkers and engaged citizens.
Dr. Lee speaks English, Korean, and Japanese. Her professional service includes roles at the Korean Institute for Women and Politics and the International NGOs Conference in Seoul. She has also contributed to academic publishing through translations and co-authored works on constructivist approaches to international relations.
