Joosten Müller is a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen (Department of Art History and Material Culture) and the University of the Arts Bremen (Department of Art & Design). His research focuses on the history, epistemology, and materiality of scientific objects, particularly cell visualizations in science communication. He holds a Research Fellow position at the University of the Arts Bremen and has conducted Visiting Research at Humboldt-University of Berlin. His doctoral project, 'Cell Artefacts. Iconography of Cells in Science Communication,' explores the evolution of cell visualizations across historical and contemporary contexts. Müller also leads the research project 'Artifacts beyond Analog and Digital' (2022–2024) as Principal Investigator.
Teaching includes workshops on 'Visualizing Science' and 'Structures of Life,' emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches between design and natural science. He co-founded the Interdisziplinäres Designlabor - Agentur für wissenschaftliches Kommunikationsdesign and has organized exhibitions such as 'How are we Picturing Cells?' and 'Cell Explorers,' which critically examine scientific communication through material artifacts. His work bridges art, design, and science to enhance public understanding of complex scientific concepts.
Müller’s publications span art history, science communication, and design theory, with a focus on object studies, epistemic practices, and educational models. He is affiliated with societies like the German Society for the History of Medicine and the Society for Artistic Research. His research emphasizes the role of material culture in shaping scientific knowledge and pedagogical practices.
