Joost Pauwelyn is a Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, and Co-Director of its Centre for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI). He holds adjunct roles, including as Murase Visiting Professor at Georgetown University Law Center. Previously, he taught at Duke University and served as a legal adviser at the WTO Secretariat (1996–2002), later advising governments and firms at King & Spalding (2007–2014). He co-founded TradeLab, a global legal clinic network, and co-edited major works like Rethinking Participation in Global Governance (2021) and Building Legal Capacity for a More Inclusive Globalization (2019).
His expertise spans WTO law, trade policy, investment law, sustainability, and global governance. Thematic focuses include trade diplomacy, climate change, and regulatory frameworks. Geographically, he specializes in North America, Northern Europe, and Western countries. Awards include the Francis Deak Prize (2009) and the Guggenheim Prize (2005).
