Dr. Joost Joustra is a Research Fellow and Visiting Senior Lecturer at King’s College London, affiliated with the Department of Theology & Religious Studies and the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He specializes in Renaissance art history, focusing on the intersection of art, Christianity, and theology. Joustra holds a PhD from the Courtauld Institute and has curated major exhibitions at the National Gallery, including Sin (2020) and Saint Francis of Assisi (2023).
His research interests span Italian painting (12th–16th centuries), patristic theology in Renaissance art, saints’ visual culture, and religion in contemporary art. He contributes to the Visual Commentary on Scripture project and teaches on the MA in Theology, Bible, and the Arts. Joustra also serves as a Trustee of Art+Christianity and on the Higher Education Committee of the Association for Art History.
Publications include co-editing exhibition catalogues and contributing to scholarly volumes on Renaissance artists like Filippino Lippi. He is a core member of the Research Centre for Arts and the Sacred at King’s, exploring religion’s role in the arts and vice versa.
