Joop Aarts was a wood workshop instructor at Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE), retiring after 30+ years of service. Known for his approachable demeanor and commitment to fostering safe, creative environments, he emphasized reducing student anxiety around machinery and craftsmanship. His philosophy centers on timeless design using sustainable, high-quality materials like walnut and zebrano wood, rejecting disposable consumer culture. A self-described “perfect man,” he built relationships with students over years, particularly through long-term projects like chair design.
Background: Before joining DAE in the 1990s, Aarts worked in social services in Rotterdam, assisting drug-users—a career he credits for shaping his empathy and teaching style. He transitioned to design later in life, studying at DAE at age 35.
Research/Design Focus: A devotee of Gerrit Rietveld’s minimalist ethos, Aarts creates furniture designed to endure centuries. He critiques fast fashion and industrial practices like IKEA’s, advocating for ethical material use. His work balances aesthetics with functionality, prioritizing labor-intensive craft to highlight human connection to materials.
Post-Retirement Plans: Aarts plans to focus on his studio practice and revisit Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit trek with his daughter. He advises students to diversify their lives beyond design, advocating for hobbies like salsa dancing and global travel to inspire creativity.
