Anja Groten is an Assistant Professor of Design Theory and Practice at PhDArts (Leiden University) and leads the Design Master’s program at Sandberg Instituut, part of the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her work bridges digital/physical media, design education, and collective organizing through interdisciplinary collectives like Hackers & Designers and Feminist Search Tools. She completed her PhD in Artistic Research at PhDArts in 2022 as part of the NWO-funded ‘Making Matters’ group.
Her research focuses on non-linear design processes, self-organization frameworks, and resisting techno-solutionism. She explores egalitarian learning formats and sustainable collective practices through projects like self-hosted digital infrastructures and feminist search tools.
Recent work emphasizes critical approaches to technology’s societal impacts, advocating for process-oriented collaboration over product-driven outcomes. She supervises PhD candidates at PhDArts, extending her theoretical contributions to design pedagogy and collective agency.
