Jools Gilson is a Professor of Creative Practice at University College Cork (UCC), leading the Department of Theatre. She holds a practice-based PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Surrey, with prior academic roles at the University of Hull and Dartington College of Arts. Her career spans over three decades as a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and educator, blending performance, radio, and installation art. As Head of UCC's School of Film, Music & Theatre (2016–2020), she championed interdisciplinary creative practices.
Her research intersects feminist theory, somatics, and performance studies, with notable works like the Knitting Map project and radio documentaries such as Chrysanthemum (BBC Radio 4) and Los Preciosos (RTÉ), which won a New York Festival Gold Award. Gilson has secured significant grants, including from the Fulbright Ireland and HEA, supporting projects on climate change and artistic doctorates.
Her creative outputs span radio dramas, peer-reviewed journals, and edited volumes like Textiles, Community & Controversy. Awards include the BBC's 'Pick of the Year' (2014) and recognition from the Arts Councils of Ireland and England. Gilson's teaching focuses on hybrid performance forms, creative writing, and somatic practices, mentoring numerous PhD students in artistic research.
