Joohyun Lim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He earned his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, M.S. from the University of California, Irvine, Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, and completed a postdoc at Baylor College of Medicine. His research focuses on understanding joint tissue formation and maintenance, particularly mechanisms underlying osteoarthritis (OA) and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD).
Research interests include cell differentiation in joint tissues, using multi-disciplinary approaches such as imaging, transcriptomics, and mouse genetic models. Key areas are the molecular basis of TMJ-OA and identifying therapeutic targets through studies on cell populations and signaling pathways. Notable projects involve BMPR1A signaling in bone and tendon biology, Fkbp10 mouse models of osteogenesis imperfecta, and mechanosensing mechanisms in bone tissue.
Publications highlight work on bone and tendon development, genetic models of skeletal disorders, and signaling pathways critical to musculoskeletal health. Lim’s lab integrates advanced techniques like single-cell RNA sequencing and 3D in vitro models to study tissue function and disease progression. Current efforts aim to bridge basic research with clinical applications for degenerative joint diseases.
