Erica Homan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Northeastern University, based in the Mugar Life Sciences Building (Boston, MA). She leads the Biology Project Lab (BIOL 2309), an inquiry-based course where undergraduate students design independent research projects in cell and molecular biology. Her mentorship has directly contributed to student publications, such as the work of George Hatzis (COS ’23).
Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation, insulin signaling, and genetic bone disorders. Key areas include:
- Insulin receptor function in adipose tissue and brain
- Transcription factors (FOXO, FoxK) in cellular metabolism
- Osteogenesis Imperfecta pathogenesis using mouse models
- Collagen modification and TGF-β signaling in skeletal development
Her publications emphasize therapeutic interventions for bone disorders (e.g., sclerostin antibodies) and metabolic crosstalk between tissues. Recent work explores environmental impacts on model organisms, while older studies establish her expertise in recessive genetic disorders and tissue-specific insulin effects.
