Jono Van Belle is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at Örebro University's School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. She is a postdoctoral researcher on the Digiscreens project, investigating identity and democracy on digital film and TV platforms in Europe, examining distribution, reception, and representation dynamics.
Her academic journey includes a joint PhD in Communication and Cinema Studies from Ghent University and Stockholm University, completed in 2019. Before her academic career, Van Belle worked as a reporter for international media companies including Woestijnvis in Belgium and MTV (Viacom), bringing practical media experience to her scholarly work.
Van Belle's research interests span multiple interconnected fields:
- Audience reception studies, particularly historical cinema-going experiences
- Gender studies and feminist approaches to media analysis
- Film history, with special expertise in Ingmar Bergman studies
- Streaming platforms and their impact on media consumption
- Media policy and regulation in the digital age
- Memory studies related to media experiences
Her recent work shows a clear trajectory toward examining digital platforms' intersection with identity formation and democratic processes. The Digiscreens project represents a significant contribution to understanding how streaming services shape cultural and political landscapes across Europe, while her work on Ingmar Bergman's international reception challenges Eurocentric perspectives in film studies.
Van Belle has established herself through publications in reputable journals including Convergence, Journal of Digital Media and Policy, and Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television. Her 2025 edited volume 'Ingmar Bergman Out of Focus' has been praised for expanding Bergman studies beyond traditional frameworks.
As an active academic community member, Van Belle serves as editor for Participations journal and is on ECREA's film studies section management team. She contributes to the Centre for Feminist Social Studies at Örebro University, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary and feminist approaches to media research.
