Jonny Branney

Dr Jonny Branney is a Clinical Professor and Principal Academic in Nursing and Clinical Sciences at Bournemouth University's School of Health and Social Care. He also serves as Programme Leader for MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and its apprenticeship variant. With dual clinical registration as a critical care nurse and former chiropractor, he bridges clinical practice and academia. His research focuses on musculoskeletal pain mechanisms, spinal biomechanics, and innovative educational methods like Team-based Learning (TBL).

Education: PhD in Healthcare Science (2014, Bournemouth University), with prior qualifications in nursing and chiropractic. Research highlights include award-winning doctoral work on spinal manipulative therapy mechanisms, funded projects on TBL applications in pain management, and a Royal College of Chiropractors fellowship exploring disc degeneration and neck pain.

Key contributions include developing patient-centered clinical trial methodologies and advancing fluoroscopy-based cervical spine motion analysis. He has supervised three completed PhD students and holds grants from NIHR, Team-based Learning Collaborative, and the Royal College of Chiropractors. His work aligns with UN SDGs for Health & Well-being and Quality Education.

Recent projects include stakeholder consultations on TBL for chronic pain management courses, funded by the NIHR RDS Southwest (2024) and TBL Collaborative (2024).
