Joni Palmer is a Lecturer II at the University of New Mexico (UNM) within the School of Architecture + Planning. She holds affiliations with the Department of Community & Regional Planning, Department of Geography & Environmental Studies, and the Arts Leadership and Business program. Her professional career spans 25+ years, blending academia with practice in planning and design.
- Education: PhD in Geography (University of Colorado at Boulder), MLA (Harvard University Graduate School of Design), BS in City & Regional Planning and Design & Environmental Analysis (Cornell University)
Her research focuses on interdisciplinary intersections of arts, culture, and sustainable communities; reading/writing landscapes through fieldbooks and geopoetics; and resilience planning. She has contributed to publications on public art, rural art practices, and urban planning.
Recent publications include analyses of cloud literacy in art-science collaborations, co-production in public art, and the role of public art in urban parks. Her work often employs participatory methodologies and emphasizes community engagement.
