Professor Jongyoon Han holds dual appointments in Electrical Engineering and Biological Engineering at MIT, where he leads the Micro/Nanofluidic BioMEMS Group within the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). His work bridges micro/nanofabrication with biomedical applications, including cell separation technologies, desalination systems, and neural prosthetics. Han received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from Seoul National University (1992-1994), followed by a Ph.D. in Applied and Engineering Physics from Cornell University (2001). Before joining MIT in 2002, he conducted microfluidics research at Sandia National Laboratories.
Research interests focus on applying micro/nano-engineering to biomolecule separation, biosensing, and water purification. Notable advancements include ion concentration polarization-based desalination, nanofluidic molecular sieves, and electrochemical nerve modulation. His lab has developed portable desalination systems and microfluidic devices for high-throughput cell analysis.
Han’s awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2003) and Analytical Chemistry Young Innovator Award (2009). His 15 most recent articles (2024-2025) highlight innovations in stem cell quality assessment, CAR-T cell safety, and biomanufacturing solutions using microfluidics and machine learning.
