Jonathon Turnbull is a Junior Research Fellow in Geography at Jesus College, University of Oxford, and a member of the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery. His academic background includes a BA in Geography from Jesus College, Oxford; an MSc in Nature, Society, and Environmental Governance from Christ Church College, Oxford; and a PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on cultural, environmental, and urban geographies, particularly exploring how understandings of nature are produced and contested across geographical contexts. Key research strands include urban rewilding, nuclear natures in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, digital ecologies, Ukrainian environmental humanities, metabolic geographies, and weird geographies.
Jonathon has received numerous awards, including the 2024 Award of Excellence from the University of Oxford and grants from institutions like the Leverhulme Centre and Christ Church College. He co-founded the Digital Ecologies research group and the Ukrainian Environmental Humanities Network, advocating for environmental justice and supporting Ukraine-related initiatives.
His teaching includes convening the MSc elective 'Digital Ecologies' and co-supervising students in more-than-human geographies. His work bridges academia and public engagement through films, exhibitions, and policy-focused research on nature recovery and environmental ethics.
