Jonathon Taylor is an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering at Tampere University, leading the Urban Physics Research Group. His work focuses on understanding environmental hazards in built environments and advancing sustainable urban development through data-driven modeling, GIS, and building physics simulations. He holds a BSc from Simon Fraser University, Canada, and a BEng and PhD in Environmental Building Science from University College London, UK.
Responsibilities include leading the Sustainable Urban Development (SUD) international bachelor's program and teaching Urban Physics, GIS fundamentals, and sustainable development. He supervises MSc and PhD students and advises on research integrity for the Faculty of Built Environment.
Research interests span climate adaptation, health impacts of urban environments, and energy efficiency. Key projects include evaluating heat-related mortality in cities, mitigating urban heat islands, and modeling household emissions in Kenya. His work is published in journals like Buildings and Cities, Environment International, and The Lancet Planetary Health.
Contributions to interdisciplinary initiatives include the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change, emphasizing urgent action for health-centered climate policies. His research integrates community-based monitoring and citizen science to address urban environmental challenges.
