Jonathon Acosta is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Annenberg Institute at Brown University. As a sociologist, his research focuses on migrant incorporation, economic/ geographic mobility, and urban public school institutions in postindustrial cities. He holds advanced degrees from Brown University, including a Ph.D. in Sociology, and has extensive K-12 teaching experience.
- Education: PhD & MA in Sociology, MA in Urban Education Policy, BA in Political Science/Ethnic Studies (all from Brown University)
His work examines how migrant students navigate weak urban institutions to achieve integration into mainstream American society. Recent publications appear in the Sociology of Development. He was honored as Rookie Teacher of the Year (2011) and recognized by the White House Initiative on Hispanic Education. Acosta also serves as a State Senator for Rhode Island District 16, representing Central Falls and Pawtucket.
Prior roles include K-12 math teacher/administrator, founding 8th grade math teacher at Blackstone Valley Prep, and Dean of Culture. He served on the Central Falls City Council (2016-2020).
