Dr. Jonathan W. Said is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with multiple leadership roles including Chief of Hematopathology, Director of Research Immunohistochemistry, and Chief of Genitourinary Pathology. He is also a member of the ACCESS Program within the Department of Cellular & Molecular Pathology and the JCCC Hematopoietic Malignancies Program. His clinical practice spans both Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center.
Dr. Said's educational background includes:
- MD from University of the Witwatersrand Medical School (1971)
- Internship at Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Boston University Medical Center (1974) and Johannesburg Hospital (1972)
- Residency in Pathology - Anatomic & Clinical at Brigham and Women's Hospital (1976)
- Fellowship in Hematopathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital (1977)
Dr. Said is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in both Clinical Pathology (1979) and Anatomic Pathology (1976).
Dr. Said's research focuses on the pathologic basis of neoplastic disease, with particular emphasis on tumor markers to characterize neoplastic proliferations. His laboratory utilizes immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization to identify tumor antigens and gene products associated with neoplastic transformation and tumor progression. Key research areas include mechanisms of lymphomagenesis, particularly the role of dendritic cells in lymphomas derived from germinal center lymphocytes; pathogenesis of HIV-related lymphoid proliferations utilizing tissue from the NIH-sponsored AIDS malignancy tumor bank; cell cycle regulation in neoplastic proliferations evaluating cyclins including cyclin A, cEBP, p15, p16, p21 and p27; and roles of viruses, including Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus, in the pathogenesis of neoplastic diseases.
Dr. Said has published extensively across multiple cancer types with a strong focus on lymphoma classification and diagnostic criteria. His work spans from basic molecular mechanisms to clinical applications and has significantly contributed to major classification systems including the World Health Organization Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours. Recent publications demonstrate ongoing active research in prostate cancer dietary interventions, CAR T-cell therapy, and genomic profiling of rare malignancies.
Dr. Said has been involved in numerous collaborative research projects, serving as a key contributor to major clinical guidelines in hematologic malignancies including the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines for T-Cell Lymphomas. His work bridges laboratory research with clinical applications to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic approaches for cancer patients.
