Jonathan Stoye is a distinguished virologist serving as Senior Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute since 2015. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2017, his career spans foundational work in retrovirology and molecular mechanisms of viral replication across prestigious international institutions.
His academic foundation includes a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (1970-1973), followed by doctoral research under Christoph Moroni at the University of Basel. Prior to his PhD, he gained five years of technical laboratory experience in Basel, Switzerland.
Stoye's research focuses on retroviral pathogenesis, with emphasis on viral-host interface dynamics and replication mechanisms. His work bridges molecular virology and infectious disease pathogenesis, contributing critical insights into viral evolution and host defense evasion strategies.
Key recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Royal Society (2017)
His career trajectory features a seven-year research associate position in John Coffin's laboratory at Boston (1982-1989), followed by significant tenure at the MRC's National Institute for Medical Research before transitioning to the Francis Crick Institute, where he leads cutting-edge virology research.
