His research centers on Japanese religious traditions with specific focus on Heian-period banishment practices and contemporary whale memorialization. Stockdale examines how political and literary frameworks shaped exile concepts after Japan replaced capital punishment with banishment (794–1185 AD), and investigates the spiritualization of whales through historical graves and modern memorials. His interdisciplinary approach bridges religious studies, cultural anthropology, and historical memory.
Stockdale contributes to academic discourse through courses including Introduction to World Religions (REL 202-A), Chinese Religious Traditions (REL 234-A), Imagining Religion (REL 340-A), and Japanimals: Knowledge, Power, and Spirituality at the Intersection of Species. His pedagogical framework emphasizes cross-cultural analysis of species-religion-power dynamics.
