Jonathan Stillo is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Undergraduate Program Director at Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on tuberculosis (TB), particularly drug-resistant forms, and uses anthropological and global health frameworks to address healthcare inequities. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Romania, studying TB treatment systems and advocating for patient-centered care. Dr. Stillo holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the City University of New York Graduate Center (2017), an M.Phil (2008), and a B.A. (2003).
His research interests include medical anthropology, global health policy, antibiotic resistance, health and human rights, and postsocialism's impact on healthcare. He has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to WHO reports. Key projects include evaluations of Romania's TB programs and advocating for integrated community support systems for TB patients.
Stillo's work emphasizes systemic healthcare gaps and ethical considerations in TB treatment. Recent publications challenge outdated practices like enforced directly observed therapy (DOT) and highlight the need for safer, patient-driven approaches. He collaborates with global health coalitions, serving as Vice-Chair of the TB Europe Coalition and Chair of STOP TB USA.
Grant funding includes support from the NSF, U.S. Department of State, and Fulbright-Hays. He actively mentors graduate students in global health and TB research, encouraging applications to Wayne State's anthropology and public health programs.
