Jonathan Sterne is Professor and James McGill Chair in Culture and Technology at McGill University's Department of Art History and Communication Studies. He has written extensively on sound history, media, and technology, with notable works including MP3: The Meaning of a Format and The Audible Past. While at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG), he is working on the book Tuning Time: Histories of Sound and Speed with Mara Mills. His research spans signal processing, impairment phenomenology, and transformations in musical instruments.
Research Interests: Sterne's work bridges sound studies, media history, and technology studies. He explores how sound reproduction technologies shape cultural memory and scientific practices, with a focus on interdisciplinary methods that link material culture, media, and political economy.
