Jens Gerrit Papenburg

Jens Gerrit Papenburg is a Visiting Professor affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin. He has held visiting professorships at Leuphana University Lüneburg (2017) and Humboldt University, Berlin (2016/17), where he continues to teach and research since October 2017. His work bridges the history of science with cultural and media studies, focusing on sound and music technologies.

Research Interests:

• Popular music and culture since 1890
• Sound studies and sonic media theory
• Historiography of engineered music listening
• Interdisciplinary approaches to media history

Notable Contribution: He co-edited Sound as Popular Culture: A Research Companion (MIT Press, 2016) and founded the research network "Sound in Media Culture: Aspects of a Cultural History of Sound." At MPIWG, he is currently working on a media history of public address systems in 1930s Germany.
