Dr. Jonathan Stecyk is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska. His research focuses on comparative physiology, particularly the cardiovascular adaptations enabling anoxia-tolerant vertebrates to survive oxygen deprivation. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia (2007), an M.Sc. from Simon Fraser University (2002), and a B.Sc. from Augustana University College (1999).
Dr. Stecyk's work integrates techniques from whole-animal physiology to molecular biology, exploring mechanisms such as mitochondrial regulation, ion flux dynamics, and gene expression changes during anoxia. His recent studies highlight adaptations in the Alaska blackfish and freshwater turtles, including cold tolerance and reoxygenation injury prevention.
His awards include the President's Medallist (2015), Cameron Award (2007), and Elsevier Young Investigator Award (2004). He advises numerous graduate and undergraduate students, many of whom have received Alaska INBRE and Murdock grants. His lab's research spans from Arctic fish physiology to neuroprotective mechanisms in anoxia-tolerant species.
Key collaborations include work with Christine Couturier and Holly Shiels on anoxia survival strategies. He also contributes to textbook chapters on fish cardiovascular systems and serves as an editorial commentator for Journal of Experimental Biology.
