Jonathan Stalling is the Interim Dean of the David L. Boren College of International Studies at the University of Oklahoma, holding the William J. Crowe, Jr. Chair in Geopolitics and Professorship of International & Area Studies. He co-directs the Institute for US-China Issues, overseeing initiatives like the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature and the English Jueju Prize. His research bridges translation studies, poetics, linguistics, and comparative cultural analysis between the US and China.
Key contributions include founding the Chinese Literature Translation Archive and developing an interlanguage method for transcribing English into Chinese characters, patented in 2020 and showcased in TEDx Talks and international exhibitions. He authored/edited eight books, including Poetics of Emptiness and Yingelishi: Sinophonic Poetry and Poetics, and pioneered the English Jueju form as cultural diplomacy. His work has been recognized through awards including the National Translation Award nomination for Winter Sun: Poetry of Shi Zhi.
Research emphasizes transcultural performance, Tang poetry soundscapes, and digital archiving. Grants include support for the CLT book series (OU Press) and collaborations with UNESCO. Academic leadership includes roles as Harold J. & Ruth Newman Chair and directorships in literary initiatives.
