Jonathan Smallwood is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Queen's University at Kingston, Canada. He holds cross-appointments at the Centre for Neuroscience Studies and is affiliated as a Full Professor since July 2020. His academic journey includes roles at the University of York (promoted to Professor in 2018), the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (2011–2013), and various other institutions. His research focuses on understanding the neural basis of spontaneous thought, mind-wandering, and their impacts on mental health and well-being, employing advanced neuroimaging and experience-sampling techniques. His work bridges cognitive psychology and neuroscience, particularly investigating the default mode network and cortical organization.
Smallwood earned his BAH (1996) and PhD (2001) in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Strathclyde. His career includes postdoctoral research at the University of British Columbia and UC Santa Barbara, among others. He is recognized as a pioneer in experience-sampling methods and their integration with neuroimaging, notably proposing the 'decoupling hypothesis' regarding mind-wandering. His research has been cited extensively, earning him recognition as a highly cited scientist.
