Jonathan Shapiro Anjaria is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Brandeis University and serves as Faculty Director of Professional Development at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on urban space, public policy, and cultural practices in South Asia, particularly in Mumbai. He critiques conventional academic training by advocating for graduate programs to expand career opportunities beyond academia. His recent book, *Mumbai on Two Wheels: Cycling, Urban Space and Sustainable Mobility*, explores sustainable transportation through bicycling communities. Anjaria’s work also examines street vendors’ rights, the role of public space, and the intersection of fun/pleasure in academic research.
His research interests span urban studies, anthropology of public space, and South Asian urbanization, with a focus on Mumbai’s informal sectors and governance challenges. He critiques neoliberal reforms’ impact on citizenship and public engagement, while advocating for inclusive urban policies. His projects emphasize the socio-political dimensions of everyday urban life, including street vendors’ resilience and middle-class activism.
Anjaria’s publications analyze urban spaces, governance, and cultural practices across South Asia. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical studies, offering insights into marginalized communities’ agency in urban contexts. He collaborates with scholars to redefine anthropological methodologies by incorporating 'mazaa' (fun/pleasure) into academic inquiry.
