He is a prominent faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine within the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Serody completed his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia Medical School, earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and completed his residency at the University of North Carolina Hospital. He furthered his training with fellowships at both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
His research program has focused on harnessing the immune system to treat disease, with particular expertise in:
- Biology of acute and chronic Graft-versus-host disease after allogeneic stem cell transplantation
- Enhancing the function of adoptive cellular therapy to treat solid tumors
- Function of B lymphocytes in the tumor microenvironment of solid tumors
- Use of nanocarrier platforms to induce anti-tumor immunity
Dr. Serody's extensive publication record demonstrates significant contributions to immunology and cancer therapy. His recent work (2023-2025) shows innovation across multiple domains including CAR T-cell therapies, nanotechnology applications in immunotherapy, mechanisms of immune cell metabolism in the tumor microenvironment, and understanding treatment responses in various cancers. His research bridges fundamental immunological mechanisms with clinical applications, particularly in developing novel therapeutic approaches for cancer patients.
As Director of the Cellular Therapy Program and Chief of Hematology, Dr. Serody leads clinical and research initiatives that position UNC as a center for advanced cancer treatments. His laboratory continues to investigate innovative approaches to enhance cellular therapies for cancer treatment, with particular focus on overcoming barriers to effective immunotherapy for solid tumors.
