Jonathan Seglow is a Professor of Political Theory at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he has served since 2000, holding the distinction of being the longest-serving academic in the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy. He holds a BA from the University of Oxford, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a PhD from the University of Manchester.
His research focuses on contemporary political theory, particularly issues such as freedom of speech, religious liberty, and special duties in associative relationships. He has authored works like Defending Associative Duties and co-authored Free Speech, and is currently working on a monograph on free speech for Oxford University Press. Seglow also serves as a Co-Investigator on the EU-funded EXFILES project, examining data encryption and law enforcement access.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on political theory and free expression, as well as postgraduate modules on political concepts and thinkers. He has supervised six PhD students to completion and remains open to mentoring new candidates.
Seglow’s recent work engages with topics such as religious accommodation in legal cases (e.g., bakery discrimination cases), the ethics of sibling relationships, and the value of sacred spaces. He has contributed to edited volumes like Religion and Political Theory and serves on editorial boards, including for Res Publica.
