Jonathan Scelsa is a Professor and K-12 Center Instructor in the Undergraduate Architecture Department at Pratt Institute's School of Architecture. A licensed architect in New York, he co-founded OP – Architecture Landscape, a practice exploring intersections between architecture and landscape. His research focuses on optical mechanics, robotic construction, and urban micro-infrastructure reorganization.
Educations:
- Master of Architecture in Urban Design with Distinction, Harvard University Graduate School of Design
- Bachelor of Architecture with Minor in Industrial Design + Fabrication, Carnegie Mellon University
Research Interests: Jonathan’s work integrates geometric principles of optical mechanics with contemporary robotic fabrication techniques. He investigates how visible micro-infrastructure elements can reshape urban environments, advocating for a dis-integrated relationship between architecture and landscape. His practice, OP, emphasizes experimental design solutions that challenge conventional disciplinary boundaries.
Recognition: His work has been supported by the American Academy in Rome, NYSCA, the Architectural League of New York, and the Fulbright Program. Publications include contributions to PIDGIN, Bracket, MONU, and co-edited volumes like The Function of Style (2020) and an upcoming Routledge title on climate-responsive pedagogy.
Teaching & Grants: Jonathan has taught at institutions including Harvard GSD, University of Pennsylvania, and Parsons. His current courses at Pratt include Advanced Design I-III. Grants have enabled explorations in robotic construction and climate-sensitive urban design.
Labs/Teams: OP – Architecture Landscape serves as a collaborative platform for experimental design, blending architectural and landscape strategies to address contemporary urban challenges.
