He is a core member of the NUSTEM outreach and research group, focusing on STEM engagement and widening participation. With a Physics MA from the University of Cambridge (1994), Sanderson transitioned from a decade-long career in television production for science and educational programs to academia. His research emphasizes computational tinkering, intergenerational learning, and equity in STEM contexts. He has received an RTS Award and a BAFTA nomination for his work.
His research explores how playful, technology-driven activities (e.g., computational tinkering, family learning projects) foster STEM interest and skills, particularly among underrepresented groups. Notable projects include the NUSTEM initiative, the 'Heart of Maker Faire' installation, and collaborations with organizations like the Royal Institution and Edinburgh Science Festival. Sanderson teaches modules in computational thinking, software architecture, and physical computing.
Publications highlight interventions to reduce STEM stereotypes in children, frameworks for digital educational games, and strategies to improve STEM career perceptions. His work bridges formal and informal learning contexts, emphasizing accessibility and creativity in education.
Current projects include the NTCA STEM and Digital Skills Programme and the 'Misusing IoT' family learning initiative. Sanderson’s expertise spans video production, live event design, and strategic consulting for science communication.
