Jonathan S. Penland is Professor of Cross-Cultural Studies at Toccoa Falls College, blending academic scholarship with pastoral practice. His PhD research from University of Georgia focused on environmental education and intercultural knowledge transfer.
Current work examines sustainable community development and ethnography methods. As pastor of Tate City's Valley Community Church, he integrates fieldwork into Appalachian community engagement.

Research explores connections between traditional ecological knowledge, faith-based initiatives, and community resilience. Teaches ethnography, religious systems, and development planning.
