Jonathan S. Marchant, PhD, is the Marcus Professor & Chair of the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy (CBNA) at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He holds a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Cambridge and completed postdoctoral training in Neurobiology at UC Irvine. His research focuses on calcium signaling pathways and their roles in cellular processes, with particular emphasis on ion channels linked to neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and parasitic infections. Dr. Marchant’s team has pioneered studies on antiparasitic agents, including the discovery of benzamidoquinazolinones (BZQs) as broad-spectrum treatments for trematode infections. His work integrates techniques such as high-throughput screening, confocal microscopy, and gene silencing to elucidate signal transduction mechanisms.
Research interests include calcium regulation in endosomes and the endoplasmic reticulum, with recent studies exploring progesterone receptor membrane components’ roles in calcium signal amplification. His publications from 2023–2024 highlight advancements in praziquantel analog design, TRPMPZQ ion channel activation, and NAADP-mediated calcium release pathways. Collaborative efforts with labs worldwide underscore his commitment to translational research addressing schistosomiasis and other parasitic diseases.
Dr. Marchant’s academic contributions span teaching and mentorship, though no formal advisee names are listed. He maintains an active laboratory at MCW, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to address challenges in ion channel biology and antiparasitic drug discovery.
