Jonathan S. Bromberg, MD, PhD is the Charles Reid Edwards, MD Professor of Surgery and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He serves as Vice Chair for Research and Director of Research for the Division of Transplantation. Dr. Bromberg has maintained continuous funding for over 25 years in basic cellular and molecular transplant immunology research, while also maintaining an active clinical practice in solid organ transplantation.
Dr. Bromberg's educational background includes an A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard College (1977), followed by combined MD and PhD (Immunology) degrees from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (1983). His postgraduate training included surgical residency at University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals and a fellowship in Transplantation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
His research focuses on T cell immunobiology, lymph node structure and function, lymphatic migration, and regulatory T cell biology in transplantation. Dr. Bromberg's laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding how lymph node structures and functions are required for tolerance induction and maintenance, the mechanisms of regulatory T cell migration and function, and the role of lymphatic vessels in immune regulation. His work has demonstrated that normal lymph node function is critical for tolerance, that regulatory T cells must migrate through lymphatics to suppress inflammation, and that specific stromal components regulate immune cell trafficking and fate decisions.
Dr. Bromberg's laboratory has published extensively in top immunology and transplantation journals including Nature Immunology, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Immunity, and American Journal of Transplantation. His research group has pioneered concepts in lymphatic migration of regulatory T cells, stromal regulation of immune responses, and the role of specific laminins in transplant tolerance. His work spans basic mechanistic studies to translational applications in transplantation.
Among his notable honors are the AST Basic Science Established Investigator Award (2013), NKF of Maryland Kidney Champion Award (2014), and multiple prestigious early career awards. He has served as Associate Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation and as Clinical Sciences Executive Editor for Transplantation.
Dr. Bromberg has been continuously funded by NIH for over 25 years, with current R01 grants investigating lymph node structure and function in tolerance, regulatory T cell migration, and the role of microbiota in transplant outcomes. His laboratory collaborates extensively with other investigators in immunology, microbiome research, and biomaterials science.
